There is a lot of innovation happening on the gadgets front with talks of TCL planning to introduce a smartphone that folds into a smartwatch and the Samsung Galaxy Fold which has been announced but is yet to be commercially available.
The buzz around foldable smartphones is exciting but the concept has failed to take off in a big way. In fact, recently Royale FlexPai was launched which is dubbed as the world’s first Foldable Android smartphone.
In the latest development, the news is now trickling in of technology giant Apple possibly working on an iPhone with a foldable display.
An application patent filed by Apple reveals the design of this anticipated futuristic foldable display. The patent application titled, ‘Flexible Display Devices’ filed with the United States Patent and Trademark Office (USPTO) reveals a breakthrough design through Apple’s patent application. The foldable iPhone has been on Apple’s radar for quite some time now. The patent application points towards a practical device which is not merely a concept idea.
The sketch included in the application has an uncanny resemblance to Motorola’s upcoming Razor 2019 device. The diagrams resemble an outward folding design similar to the Royale FlexPai. Some of the diagrams also represent an inward folding display. The patent application does not give a clear idea of the overall concept. Some of the diagrams also hint at double folding design with two hinges, which resembles a shoe with three layers of the main body.
Referring to the patent sketches, LetsGoDigital has visualized the images of the concept iPhone in the works.
Other smartphone makers are also preparing their own concepts of foldable phones, but they haven’t been as aggressive and ambitious as Apple. The tech firm is among the first smartphone maker to file a patent for the foldable smartphone’s design. In the patent document, Apple writes, “It would be desirable to be able to use flexible display technology to provide improved electronic devices.”
Companies such as Xiaomi, Huawei are expected to launch their own foldable smartphones in the future. Samsung has already hinted at launching a foldable smartphone with a 7-inch screen, which gets folded into a 4.6-inch device.
